Bonk is a one-man percussion ensemble featuring the
unique talents of Mike Wojik. Mike performs complex original musical
compositions using an array of ethnic percussion instruments, including
djembe, berimbao and didgeridoo, while accompanying himself with
foot-operated shakers, bells and blocks. Initial experiments with this
concept led to the release of Bonk’s self-titled debut CD in 2000, which
provided the inspiration for the successful dance musical Dreamtime. The 2004 release, Kolombangara, is a more advanced concept piece
that draws upon the musical traditions and mythology of the Indian Ocean
region.
On Kolombangara: “After the many albums I’ve recorded with other bands and songwriters, I
was ready for the experience of guiding my own concept through its
development. I feel that the first album achieved my objective of being
very meditative, spacey, and cinematic, without being overtly ‘drumistic.’
This new album will see the return of the drums to the forefront of the
music as well as a greater emphasis on the raw energy of a live
performance. In addition, all of the artwork, logos and related visual
materials will work together in a unified theme, providing a focus that
will identify where I am, at this point, in my growth as an artist.”
Bonk will
be performing live in 2009 in support of the third album, Hands In Motion,
as well as hosting such events as children’s didgeridoo workshops and music
classes. Look for the Hands In Motion CD Release Party of Summer 2009.
